Traralgon is a town located in the Latrobe Valley region of Victoria, Australia. It is the largest town in the Latrobe City municipality and serves as an administrative center for the region. The town is situated approximately 165 kilometers southeast of Melbourne and has a population of around 25,000 people.

The area that is now Traralgon was originally inhabited by the indigenous Gunai-Kurnai people. The name "Traralgon" is derived from a Gunai-Kurnai word meaning "little river crossing". European settlement of the area began in the 1840s when squatters started grazing sheep in the area.

The town of Traralgon was established in the late 1860s following the discovery of coal in the region. The first coal mine in Traralgon opened in 1865 and by the 1880s, the town had become a major center for coal mining. Other industries in the area included sawmills, farming, and brickmaking.

Traralgon grew rapidly in the early 20th century as the demand for coal increased. The town's population doubled between 1911 and 1921 and continued to grow steadily throughout the century. The completion of the Princes Highway in the 1950s made it easier for people to travel to and from Traralgon, leading to further population growth.

Despite the decline of the coal industry in the latter half of the 20th century, Traralgon has continued to grow and is now a thriving regional center. The town is home to a range of industries including agriculture, forestry, manufacturing, and retail. It is also a popular tourist destination, with attractions such as the Traralgon Railway Reservoir Conservation Reserve and the Latrobe Regional Gallery.

Traralgon has undergone significant development in recent years, with a number of new housing estates and commercial developments being built. The town is also set to benefit from the Victorian Government's plans to invest in regional infrastructure, including the upgrade of the Princes Highway and the construction of a new Gippsland Rail Line.

Today, Traralgon is a vibrant and thriving regional center that is proud of its rich history and cultural heritage. The town's strong sense of community and its commitment to sustainability and innovation make it an exciting place to live, work, and visit.
